UC Berkeley’s name and other trademarks may be displayed on merchandise, in advertising, in television/film productions, or in association with sponsored events, when approved by the Office of Marketing & Business Outreach or other authorized campus department. These promotional uses of the University’s trademarks must be carefully managed to protect the University’s reputation and promote campus-sponsored initiatives.
UC Berkeley’s licensing programs regulate, promote, and protect the commercial use of the University's name and identifying marks. When merchandise displaying the University’s trademarks are resold for profit, the University receives a royalty from the licensee, who has been granted permission to use the trademarks.
In addition to ensuring that the University's name and other trademarks are used appropriately and with permission, the use of licensed vendors also helps to support the University's efforts to be socially responsible. Licensees are required to comply with the UC Code of Conduct for Trademark Licensees and become members of the Fair Labor Association (FLA). The FLA monitors compliance to the Code and conducts independent assessments of factories to determine if there are any violations. By using a licensed vendor, you can do your part to support the rights of workers who are engaged in the manufacture of UC-branded apparel and other goods.
If you are interested in acquiring a license for retail sales associated with the Domestic and International Licensing Program, contact the Collegiate Licensing Company or the Berkeley campus' licensing administrator, Dan Perkins, Intercollegiate Athletics at perkins77 [at] berkeley [dot] edu.
